Being enthusiastic, yet incomparably ignorant in photography, I’ve only just become aware of Saul Leiter. I have the Cartier-Bresson exhibition at Somerset House to thank for this. The exhibition placed together CB’s black and white images with particular photographers who choose to embrace colour. In these five rooms, the curator sought to provide a counterpoint to CB’s insistence that colour photography was not an evolution in the art, that colour could not achieve the poignancy and intensity that black and white images conveyed.
First room – my first Saul Leiter. What a humdinger.
Subsequently, I came across this inspirational quote from him (thank you Wikipedia)…
“In order to build a career and to be successful, one has to be determined. One has to be ambitious. I much prefer to drink coffee, listen to music and to paint when I feel like it.”
